Observation Narrative
This plot is situated in an old oxbow swale of the South Anna River, ca. 0.8 km NW of plot HANO008 and ca. 120 m from the main river channel. While the habitats and vegetation of the two plots are coarsely similar, this sample differs from HANO008 in having Quercus phellos and Q. michauxii as overstory co-dominants, Carpinus caroliniana as an understory/shrub dominant, and a different set of graminoids dominant in the herb layer. In addition, the habitat appears subject to only short or ephemeral flooding. Herb cover is sparse in hollows and moderately dense on hummocks. Adjacent, higher areas of the floodplain toward the river are better drained and support a "rich" floodplain forest.
